How to become an Amazon seller: who can register
Anyone with a registered business or a proprietorship can sell on Amazon India. You do not need a warehouse or a big brand. Many sellers start from a single room with one product.
What you do need is a business identity Amazon can verify. That means a PAN, a bank account in the same name and, for most categories, a GST registration. If you are a manufacturer, trader or reseller, the process is the same. Only the category approvals differ.
Amazon seller documents required
- PAN card of the business or proprietor
- GSTIN for the categories you plan to sell
- Bank account in the business name with IFSC
- Business or pickup address
- Mobile number and email you check daily
- Identity proof for verification
- Trademark details if you plan to apply for Brand Registry
Do you need GST to sell on Amazon India?
For most product categories, yes. Amazon asks for a GSTIN during registration, and the invoices it generates for you carry that number. A few categories have been treated differently over the years, so check the GST prompt on the registration screen for your exact category.
If you do not have GST yet, get it done first. Registering on Amazon with half the details usually leads to a stuck account that needs a fresh round of verification.
The Amazon seller registration process, step by step
Go to Amazon's official seller website for India and start the sign-up with an email and mobile number that belong to the business. Use details you will still have access to in three years. Accounts linked to a former employee's phone are a common headache.
1. Business and tax details
Enter your legal business name exactly as it appears on your GST and PAN. Small spelling differences are the most common reason verification fails.
2. Store name
This is the name buyers see. Keep it short and close to your brand. It can be edited later, but early reviews stay tied to it.
3. Bank and identity verification
Add the bank account where payouts will land, then complete identity checks. Amazon may ask for a video or document check before the account goes live.
4. Pickup address and fulfilment
Add the address your products ship from and choose how orders will be delivered. You can change this later as you grow.
Fulfilment: FBA, Easy Ship or Self Ship
With Fulfilled by Amazon (FBA) you send stock to an Amazon warehouse and Amazon packs, ships and handles returns. It costs more per unit but often helps with Prime visibility and delivery speed.
With Easy Ship you pack the order and Amazon's courier picks it up. With Self Ship you handle delivery yourself. Most new sellers start on Easy Ship to learn demand, then move fast-selling products to FBA.
Launching your first product the right way
Your first listing decides how fast the account grows. Write the title for how buyers search, not how your factory names the product. Use clean images on a white background, then lifestyle images that answer questions: size, use, what is in the box.
Price competitively for the first few weeks, keep enough stock that you never go out of stock during the launch, and run a small Sponsored Products campaign to collect search data. Read that data every few days and adjust.
